Mars data translated to Gaelic

Work led by the Earth and Planetary Surface Processes group in the Department of Geography has received attention in the Provost’s annual review.

The website provides access, as gaeilge, to the most beautiful images from Mars that are currently being returned by NASA’s HiRISE camera.

Part of Trinity’s mission is to ‘engage wider society, demonstrate leadership, and promote the values of equality and pluralism’. The initiative of the Earth and Planetary Surface Processes group to form a group that would provide translation of image captions for Mars image data was included in the Provost annual report.

The report notes that  the ‘Beautiful-Mars’ website (as gaeilge) was launched to encourage budding scientists to learn about the Red Planet, and to engage school children in planetary science whilst learning Irish. With a website, Tumblr and dedicated Twitter feed (@HiRISEIrish), this is the only Irish-language resource from an active NASA mission.

Is é atá i HiRESE ná an ceamara is cumhachtaí a seoladh chuig pláinéad eile. Is í an t-aon acmhainn atá ag NASA as Gaeilge.
